On Tuesday I photographed my best work for my portfolio and unit 9 work which was comparing portfolios with what they do well which helped me have an understanding of what my portfolio should be like professionally. It made me think that for it to have most impact of my work has to have a subject like analogue graphics so a potential client can look at my work and understand what I do and whether they want me for the job.
On Wednesday I cut up some wood to make some print blocks and some foam which I glued with pva and left it over night. I chose to do these with the simple continuous shapes I have been using throughout my project. To extend on last weeks realisation of the project not going as well as I hoped I decided to make lettering for spray paint.
On Thursday I began editing my videos and voice clips on the macs. I mainly worked on the voice clips and overlayed them so they answer the same questions together. I was advised to add an extra clip of me walking around Wrabness to fill in the gaps that my photos have- with this I could overlay that with the other videos as it makes a more mystical effect. I added varnish to my blocks for printing and leaving them to dry over the weekend and I hope to print with these next week as well as do some typography. I also made my flickr portfolio which now that it is up looks more typography based than anything which links into what I am thinking of doing in the future.
On Friday I made more lettering using quotes from interviews with key words like; calming, trees, fields, birds and grass. Then on Saturday I made some videos of me walking around Wrabness to extend on my video. Also, I spray painted using the type that I made. Although, I found that because I only had black and white spray paint meant that the results looked very dark and actually juxtaposed the meaning of the words that I was meant to. If mixed with acetate then on a projector would make a bigger effect due to them being so bold; yet I still think there needs to be colour involved.
On Sunday I decided to play with colour and type using ink.
The colour overlayed with my spraypaint would give off a better idea.
This week I want to develop my work through creating a zine and editing my video. Also, I need to go to the printroom to develop my Margret Berg inspired work as well as Marianne Keating’s work.
I will make my artist research more obvious by making clear posts of the artists that have inspired most.
At the start of this project we make a project proposal which I said I would specialise in analogue graphics. I have explored around analogue graphics through work done in a storybook which I need to write about. I have stuck to using Wrabness as inspiration of my project and have done a lot lot of small sketchbook work but not enough furthering of ideas. It has mainly been using simplifying of shapes and extending weave and spray paint. I wanted to explore pop-up and I have done some experimentation with this but find it challenging to extend any further.
I explained in the proposal that I wished to look at print room techniques but due to choosing different workshops than I originally intended it has been more analogue through Stewarts workshop and more based on pattern due to Aerons. I hope to still use print however through print blocks and typography.
I have looked at Juhl Hansens work yet it has only inspired me through the use of mixed media experimentation. Lisa Kokin …..
Also, I wanted to reflect on my blog which I have done throughout. I just need to make connections of my research and work and make my research more obvious on both my sketchbook and blog.
I now wish to explore analogue through making various experiments with booklets. Putting work together into a zine. Talking about my artists- how they have been selective and useful. I wish to finish a video and show how people naturally are connected to nature and find it peaceful yet do not like to share the experience with others.
On Monday I tried to start on my research book to show my connections visually and how I have used their work to create my own ideas through theirs.
On Tuesday I did some experiments with how Abigail Reynold approaches her use of photographs by playing with shapes on black and white with colour. I tried to cut up shapes like she does but instead of raising parts I decided to keep them flat to show the contrast of colours. I got feedback on the first image which was that it was like an illusion with how when you look at certain parts of the image you think they match up yet when you look closely they don’t. After I decided to overlay the second image with the colour image I cut out. I like how the to images look like the same but if you look close they aren’t.
Wednesday and Thursday I tried to update my bibliography, all I need to do with it now is to put it in alphabetical order.
Next week, I hope to explore typography as after revisiting my proposal I realised that I need more development work which I do best through type, this can then be linked with analogue. I wish to explore how I could use acetate and how I can explore the use of pages, instead of sticking to a typical magazine style.
So far my project has not been as successful as I hoped due to the lack of research and context analysis throughout. I realised I could have approached this project differently by looking at daily anxieties, especially on the bus. I would have achieved this through recording thoughts and feelings on the bus and general social situations I struggle with daily. I’m thinking of doing this as a project in the future as I feel the outcome could bring out different views of other people.
On Monday I received tutor feedback which made me think about how I need to start connecting research to my work but also gave me ideas on how I should start approaching my project in a more fun experimental way. Through typography I can make my project stronger as my previous feminist project was my most experimental project and contextual overall. With this I can thoroughly experiment through a variety of methods like spray paint, letter distortion, print making and then I can put my previous experimental work with typography to give a powerful message across. This message being- we all secretly like being with wildlife, but alone for relaxation.
This means that I need to research typography in spray paint, print and general lettering. Yet, still be making connections with my artists of my current work to show where the inspiration and experimentation has come from.
This is a debate between wether a persons development of who they are is mainly effected by their genes or the way they are brought up in particular environments. I wanted to look at how nature and nurture can effect my project as everyone is brought up differently which leads to different opinions. Just like how people have different ideas of a sanctuary.
John Watson believes strongly that nurture can overcome nature through the theory that if you were chose a child from a group of infants you would be able to train them to be ready for any occupation no matter its personal talents.
Nature is about how we have different traits to each other e.g eye colour and hair colour. Also, personality, intelligence, likes and dislikes.
Also, introverted and extroverted people are factored in this too. More introverted are more likely to go to places like county sides due to spending time alone is their recharge time where as extroverts have the need to recharge by being social with other people.
Saturday I went to the Harry Potter studios in London. I found it interesting as they did models of the places in the castle in card and wood. This made me think about making models of parts of Wrabness.
